Our History

    Our history begins in 1946, when Hyman Soloway, after serving in the Canadian army, returned to Ottawa to join his old friend, Jack Mirsky, in the practice of law. During the first few years the firm, then known as Mirsky, Soloway & Mirsky, focused on civil, criminal and litigation work.

    The 1950s post-war era was a decade of growth for Ottawa and our firm. To support growing demand, the firm added several more lawyers, including future name partners Lou Assaly, Ed Houston and Pat Galligan.

    In 1962, Jack Mirsky was tragically killed in an automobile accident. Hyman Soloway assumed the role of leadership of the firm. He stayed focused on building a firm of quality service and kept Mirsky Soloway Assaly & Houston on a path of steady growth.

    In 1963, Maurice Wright joined the firm, soon after followed by a merger of with the former firm of Greenberg and Wright. Soloway Wright became the largest real estate practice in Ottawa and developed a national labour law practice. Over the next several decades Hyman Soloway and Maurice Wright became known throughout Canada as two of the best lawyers of their generation, leading numerous lawyers to develop a wonderful real estate practice and being one of the few firms in the country that practically wrote the book on labour law, all the while engaging in almost every area of legal work.

    Throughout the next two decades the firm continued to expand, adding many highly regarded lawyers, including nine former partners of the firm who went on to serve as judges of Ontario and Federal courts.

    • 1970 – Pat Galligan appointed to the Ontario High Court of Justice, subsequently to the Ontario Court of Appeal
    • 1983 – Gerald Rip appointed to the Tax Court of Canada, became Chief Justice in 2008
    • 1990 – Ed Houston appointed to Ontario Court of Justice
    • 1990 – David McWilliam appointed to Ontario Court of Justice (General Division), subsequently to the Superior Court of Justice
    • 1990 – Gordon Killeen appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice
    • 1991 – Gerald Morin appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice, and subsequently appointed to the Superior Court of Justice
    • 1992 – Lynn Ratushny appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice, subsequently appointed to the Superior Court of Justice
    • 1992 – Dianne Nicholas appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice
    • 1995 – Monique Metivier appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice, subsequently to Superior Court of Justice

    In 1994, we opened our Kingston office to better serve a growing client base throughout Eastern Ontario. Our Kingston team focuses on Business & Corporate Law, Corporate Finance & Securities, Commercial Leasing, Estate Planning & Administration, Real Estate & Development and leverages our Ottawa team and resources to offer comprehensive advice and support.

    Hyman Soloway worked until October 2003 and died in July 2004. Maurice Wright retired in 1985. Today, we honour their memory by pursuing excellence in the legal services we provide to our clients and the dedication with which we serve our communities.
